This proposal was discussed in 2005 and 2007 with leading charities supporting the concept. Dr Paul Biscoe was appointed part time CEO in 2007 and the partnership was registered as a not for profit company in 2008. Board Members have been appointed and a Steering Committee reviews progress and direction. Mr David Naylor of the Perry Foundation served as Secretary during the formative period, but these duties were transferred to Mrs Elizabeth Stephens in 2008. Also in 2008, the web site afcp.co.uk was established to pass ideas and information to members and potential recipients of charity funds.

Charities that support agriculture are diverse both in the focus of their work and the level of their resources. They were established by people who appreciated the need to support and develop an industry that provides one of the basics of life and showcases British expertise. Around 200 charities exist with the support of UK agriculture as their main objective and some have been in existence for over a century. Collectively they have made a significant contribution to the development of the agricultural industry.

UK Agriculture is a science based industry that is essential to the national economy. Through the adoption of new conventionally produced crop varieties and new environmentally sensitive production systems for both crops and livestock, UK farmers produce most of the temperate crops that feed our population of about 60m people. Countryside stewardship also gives a rich and varied landscape that is appreciated and enjoyed by both residents and visitors. Correctly focussed R&D work with effective knowledge transfer underpins this activity.

Start up funding for AFCP has been provided by the NFU Mutual Charitable Trust, the Morley Foundation, the Perry Foundation, the Douglas Bomford Trust and the Frank Parkinson Trust, with other Charities providing "benefit in kind" support. Ultimately, charity membership will be through subscription.
